Ask someone what their favorite bean dish is, and they’ll usually name a soup or a stew — fixtures of home cooking that are filling and easy to share. Beans become a vessel for hospitality the most in the fall and winter, when they're ladled into bowl after bowl to warm us up on cold nights. As beans hit the table, a palpable gratitude crystallizes as loved ones, neighbors, family and new friends huddle together to fill our plates and refill our cups.
Beans have long played a role in bringing people together, and this issue feels like a natural extension of that story. With pieces that alternate between reality and fantasy, Issue 2 is an ode to the breadth of culture, history and flavors that beans carry.
